Abstract

Japan has realized and maintained its vertical datum through national leveling campaigns on benchmarks across the entire country starting from the Origin of the Vertical Datum of Japan. However, these campaigns took more than a decade to complete, and the leveling was subject to systematic error accumulation over long distances, leading to larger estimated errors in the elevation results as the distance from the origin of the vertical datum increased. To address these problems, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan transitioned from a leveling-based vertical datum to a geoid-based vertical datum on April 1, 2025, to update the national elevation results for the GNSS CORS network, triangulation stations, and benchmarks. This paper reports the details of the new geoid-based vertical datum of Japan, the positive impact of the transition to the new vertical datum, and the procedure for updating the national elevation results.
